What to Pack for an Irish Golf Trip: A Premium Gear Guide
There Is No Bad Weather, Only Bad Gear
On any given day at Ballybunion or Royal Portrush, you can experience sunshine, horizontal rain, gale-force wind, and a gentle mist — all within the same round.
The Layering System
Layer 1: Base Layer
A moisture-wicking, lightweight base layer worn directly against the skin.
- Recommended: Merino wool or synthetic performance fabric (Under Armour ColdGear, Galvin Green Elmo)
- Avoid: Cotton. Cotton absorbs moisture and becomes cold and heavy.
Layer 2: Mid Layer
An insulating layer that traps body heat.

Layer 3: Outer Shell (The Critical Layer)
A fully waterproof, windproof outer shell. This is the single most important item you will pack.

- Budget: Expect to spend €300–€500 on a premium golf rain jacket. It will last 5+ years.
Waterproof Trousers
Non-negotiable. Must have full-length side zips so you can pull them on over your golf shoes.
Footwear: Two Pairs, Both Waterproof
Pack two pairs of waterproof spiked golf shoes. If one pair gets soaked on Day 1, you need a dry pair for Day 2.
Essential Accessories
- Rain Gloves: 2–3 pairs of synthetic rain gloves (FootJoy RainGrip)
- Headwear: A fitted beanie and a bucket hat (not a baseball cap — it blows off)
- Umbrella: Leave it at home. On an exposed links course with 30mph winds, an umbrella is a liability.
